Rooms facing water or birches
Glass from floor to ceiling, linen on the beds, a desk turned towards the window. We stopped there on purpose.
-
Harbour Room
Wide windows over the water. The fishing boats and the weather handle the decoration.
-
Courtyard Room
These face the birches in the inner yard, and they're the quietest rooms we have.
-
Loft Suite
Up under the roof beams: a sleeping loft over a small living room, with the longest view of the harbour in the house.
Café & courtyard
Small comforts, close at hand
-
The bakery
Rye loaves, cardamom buns and filter coffee at the street counter from seven.
-
The courtyard sauna
A cedar cabin between the birches, hot by late afternoon, cold shower right outside.
-
The reading room
Low chairs and a long table by the window. The shelves lean towards Nordic crime novels.
-
Bike hire at the door
Upright bikes with baskets and lamps, parked by the entrance. Ask at the desk for a key.
Inside the hotel
The casino upstairs
18+Lumen keeps a small casino inside the hotel, on the first floor directly above the lobby. An open oak stair starts beside reception, so nobody has to go outdoors or fetch a coat to get there. You just walk up.
It's a modest room. There are a few tables, a short bar with drinks and light snacks, and low lamps along the windows facing the quay. Some guests come up for an hour after dinner. Others stay at the bar and watch the boats tie up for the night.
The casino opens in the evening and stays shut all day. Its door is at the top of the stair, next to the reading room. Dress is smart-casual, which means no sportswear, though nobody expects a tie.
Entry to the casino is for guests aged 18 and over, the legal minimum age in Denmark. Staff check photo ID at the door every evening, whatever age you look.
Limits are set on the gaming floor, and a member of staff goes through them before you sit down. A printed copy of the casino house rules hangs by the door, with a second one kept at reception.
Would you rather not be let in at all? Self-exclusion from the casino can be arranged at reception. It's handled privately, takes a few minutes and lasts for the period you pick.
For support beyond Lumen, Gamblers Anonymous has meetings in many countries plus online ones open to anyone, and BetBlocker offers a free blocker for gambling sites. Nobody asks for your name.
